Special to OutdoorsWeekly.com Scot Hanson caught this 38-fish Monday morning (March 8) on the Mississippi River near Red Wing just south of the dam. Thank you for reporting the tagged lake sturgeon. We appreciate all returned tags as they are an important tool in documenting movement and survival of these fish. The fish you caught was tagged on 10-3-07 and was 34.3" at that time. The MN DNR began tagging lake sturgeon in the Mississippi River in the spring of 2007 and have to date tagged 149 fish (between 12-60"), of which most were captured and tagged below Lock and Dam 3. The objective of the tagging study is to determine population abundance, size structure, and movement. As you may be aware, a similar tagging study is being conducted in Lake St. Croix and fisheries crews have tagged several hundred fish. These "St. Croix" fish have been documented as far down as lower Lake Pepin. Again, thank you for reporting your tagged fish. I would appreciate the photos of the fish you caught. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional information or questions. Best regards.
