When the midwinter doldrums transition to late ice, look for bays on the north side of larger lakes. Walk out with a lightweight Fish Trap and only enough gear for each outing. Wear a life jacket, go with friends, and bring a throwable safety device tied to a rope just incase. The bite can be the best of the winter, as evidenced by Dave Genz’s jumbo perch taken on a Lindy Rattl’n Flyer Spoon.
