My First Time Hunting 2009
By Tanner Roob
8 years old, 3rd grade

Tanner Roob, age 8, with his Dad, Craig, and Grandpa Vince.
Day one: Me, my dad Craig, my uncle Matt, my grandpa Ken and Grandpa Vince went to deer camp for my first time. We woke up at 5:05 am. I popped out of bed ready for hunting because I was so excited. We got ready on the porch with all of our hunting gear. We needed a flash light to climb up the ladder into the stand. We waited and waited, then it was time to shoot. Early that morning me and my dad both saw a deer. A little too young to shoot, so we passed. We didn’t see anything until night.
Then I saw a deer walking by the tree line. I tapped on my dad’s back, and said, “dad, deer, deer, deer, deer” very quietly. My dad raised the gun and took a shot. It hit the deer and dropped in it’s tracks. It kicked for about 12 seconds. My dad said, “Watch it so it does not run away”. We waited 10 minutes to be sure, and walked to the deer. It was not moving and we knew it was dead. We walked to the cabin to tell grandpa Vince we got a deer. We waited to gut the deer until the rest of the hunting group was there to help. We put the deer in the back of the trailer, and brought it to the cabin.
Day two: It was harder getting up in the morning. We put our gear on in the porch. We went out that morning and we heard something in the weeds. It was too early to shoot, so we waited and waited until it was time to shoot. Around 7:30 a.m. was saw something move. Two deer came running across the field and my dad took a shot at the biggest one. We thought we missed until it started kicking. It ran out of sight. We waited 30 minutes, then we got out of our stand and looked for blood. We found her laying about 5 feet in the woods. It was the biggest deer of the weekend.
